What does cross-chain mean in crypto?

The ability to transfer assets, data, or messages between blockchains. Since blockchains cannot communicate natively, bridges enable interoperability between isolated networks.

How does a lock-and-mint bridge work?

It locks assets in a smart contract on the source chain and mints wrapped tokens on the destination chain; moving back burns the wrapped tokens and unlocks the originals.

Are cross-chain bridges safe to use?

Bridges carry real risks, including smart contract bugs, validator compromise, and message verification flaws, so it is worth researching a bridge's track record first.

What's the difference between a bridge and a wrapped token?

A bridge is the infrastructure that moves assets between blockchains. A wrapped token represents an asset on a non-native blockchain, such as WETH on BNB Chain, often created via lock-and-mint.

How Cross‑Chain Bridges Move Assets Between Blockchains

Q: Why have cross-chain bridges been targeted by hackers?

They hold large liquidity pools backing bridged assets, and their security must reconcile independent blockchains, creating a bigger attack surface than single-chain apps.

Imagine holding USDC on Ethereum and wanting to use it on Solana. You cannot just send it: the two blockchains do not speak the same language, each with its own rules and consensus mechanism. Cross-chain bridges are protocols that connect isolated blockchain networks, letting assets and data move from one chain to another.

What Does Cross-Chain Mean

Cross-chain refers to the ability to transfer assets, data, or messages between different blockchain networks, which cannot natively communicate with each other. A simple way to picture this is as continents separated by oceans, unable to trade without ships or bridges connecting them.

Why Blockchains Need Bridges to Interact

There is no built-in way for Ethereum to know what happened on Solana, or for Bitcoin to verify a Solana transaction. Bridges establish a route for tokens, messages, and smart contract calls, letting dApps leverage different chains and developers collaborate across ecosystems.

Lock-and-mint bridge process: tokens locked on source chain, wrapped tokens minted on destination chain

How a Lock-and-Mint Bridge Works

Tokens are sent to a smart contract on the source chain, which locks them. The bridge verifies the deposit, typically through validators or oracles, then mints an equivalent number of wrapped tokens on the destination chain. A wrapped token represents the original asset elsewhere; bridging ETH to BNB Chain generally produces WETH. To move back, wrapped tokens are burned and the originals unlocked.

How a Burn-and-Mint Bridge Works

This approach destroys tokens on the source chain and mints new native tokens on the destination, then reverses to move back, avoiding the need for wrapped tokens or a liquidity pool. It is used by protocols such as Circle's CCTP for USDC and LayerZero's OFT standard, though a compromised bridge could still mint assets freely.

Popular Cross-Chain Bridges in Practice

Several bridges have become core infrastructure in the multi-chain ecosystem, including Wormhole, LayerZero, Synapse, and Circle CCTP. Official (canonical) bridges such as Arbitrum Bridge are built by network developers and are generally considered safer since they avoid third-party validators.

Risks of Using Cross-Chain Bridges

Cross-chain bridges have been among the most exploited categories of crypto infrastructure in recent years, since they hold substantial liquidity and their security must reconcile independent blockchain environments.

Key risks include smart contract bugs, validator or oracle compromise, forged cross-chain messages, liquidity exhaustion, and chain-hopping to move illicit assets.

Using a bridge means trusting that its smart contracts are secure, its validators are honest, and its message verification is robust. As Chainlink puts it: "Ultimately, you are responsible for assessing the bridge that you use to move your assets".

Conclusion

Cross-chain bridges are essential infrastructure for the multi-chain Web3 ecosystem, moving assets and data between isolated blockchains via mechanisms like lock-and-mint and burn-and-mint. But they carry real risks, are complex, hold large amounts of liquidity, and have been targeted in some of the largest crypto hacks on record. Understand how a bridge works and what security measures are in place before using it.
